David Crane

David Crane born 13 August 1957

David Crane is an American writer and producer, born in Philadelphia. He was one of the creators of the hugely successful TV sitcom Friends in 1994, along with his longtime friend Marta Kauffman. In 1996 he created and executive produced the sitcom Veronica's Closet, which starred Kirstie Alley.

He is primarily known for his comedic writing. Crane lives with his partner, Jeffrey Klarik. Together, they have created a new Friends-like sitcom, The Class.

Disappointingly, unlike several of his gay TV writer/producer contemporaries, Crane failed to introduce any significant gay characters in ten years' of Friends.

Allow me to take issue with your statement that Crane "failed to introduce any significant gay characters in ten years of FRIENDS". Carol, Ross's ex-wife and her partner Susan, were major recurring lesbian characters. The show dealt with Carol coming out, Carol and Susan raising a child together,as well as their wedding. In fact, in 1995 the series won a GLAAD Award.

There always seemed to be an anti-gay undercurrent in 'Friends', actually. Just look at the distasteful. almost juvenile, reactions at hint of the subject of homosexuality, especially with men.
It seemed, they were too focussed on defining what is normal and abiding by the notion of rigidly defined normalcy. Six 20-somethings, white, relatively well off, good looking friends in NYC. Never appealed to me as interesting.
I did not see any episodes with lesbians. If there were, knowing those six main characters, the guys loved the idea and I'm sure they spewed the usual heterosexist reactions to lesbians. Lesbians are more widely accepted than gay men, much due to the perverted perceptions that girl-on-girl action is for the pleasure of (piggish) men. Same old, same old.
Disappointing, indeed.
